General description of the imprint
Pier 1 of the Stoa of the Agora is preserved in the wall bordering the building to the south. Timber evidence consists of a series of imprints within the wall alternating with stone blocks (at the time of the excavation, three blocks were preserved, placed longitudinally, today only two of those). Other stone blocks can be seen placed transversally inside the wall. There are different reconstructive hypotheses of the pier: hypothesis 1 based on studies by F. Tomasello and J. Shaw suggests the presence of vertical timber supports at the corners of the pier and horizontal timber elements alternating with stone blocks in the high (see Shaw 1987; Tomasello 1996); hypothesis 2 by N. Hellner suggests only the presence of two timber elements and two stone blocks placed respectively on parallel sides of the pier and alternating for the whole height of the pier, without vertical supporting elements (see Hellner 2011).
