General description of the location
Minoan settlement located on the far eastern coast of Crete. The settlement lies on the slopes of the hills surrounding the valley where the palace was built. The palace is oriented on the NE-SW axis. The main entrance was from the East through a monumental gate leading via a stepped ramp to an interior court. Through that, the Central Court was accessible via a roofed corridor. The Central Court provided access to all four of the wings of the palace. Another entrance to the palace from South provided direct access to the Central Court through a long passage. The palace was built in the early LM IB period. At a later LM IB phase, the so-called "SW Expansion" of the palace (Rooms XVII-XXI) was added to the original palatial complex.
